Web offset printer history :: Hannanprint
1887

Francis Hannan (1854-1907) opens his first butcher shop in the Sydney suburb of Randwick, having migrated from Ireland via New Zealand in 1879.

 

In succeeding decades the family builds a chain of butchery businesses and an extensive property portfolio in Sydney.

 

1934

Marks the Groups entry into publishing.

 

Norman Hannan (1895 - 1973), Francis' son, establishes the family's first newspaper, The Randwick District News.

 

1958

The Double Bay Courier is acquired and with it the company's first Linotype machines.

 

The plant is shifted to a new printing factory in Randwick.

 

1961

A 50:50 joint publishing venture is formed between the Hannan family and a company jointly controlled by the Packer family company, Australian Consolidated Press and Fairfax Suburban Publications Pty Ltd, merging five competing papers into three.

 

1968

Marks the Groups entry into printing.

 

After 34 years of outsourcing the printing of their newspapers and magazines, the group acquires its first web offset press.

 

Michael Hannan, the present Group Managing Director, joins the business and Hannanprint is formed.

 

1978

Another web press is added.

 

1981

The group moves to heat-set web offset printing for magazines with the installation of its first Harris M200 press.

 

Our first contracted heatset magazine contract is for the printing of the ACP owned modern Motor magazine and the September 1981 issue is our first ever heat set magazine production.

 

1985

Hannanprint Sydney pioneers the use of colour on gloss paper, making Courier Newspapers the first suburban newspaper in Australia to use colour.

 

1986

The group relocates to an 11-hectare site in Bourke Road Alexandria - 10 minutes south of Sydney's CBD and 5 minutes north of Sydney's Airport.

 

Hannanprint Sydney is now the largest one site printing facility in the Southern Hemisphere.

 

1987

Newsagents Direct Distribution (NDD) is established to take group and client publications into retail newsagency and supermarket outlets throughout Australia.

 

The group acquires Champion Communications,a large web and sheetfed plant, specialists in direct marketing products.

 

1988

Marinya Media is invited to replace John Fairfax Group as a 50% shareholder in the business.

 

1990

Hannanprint acquires Macquarie Print from John Armati and Fairfax Group (3 plants - NSW, VIC and SA), a large web offset printer with 42 printing units in production.

 

A 10-year exclusive print contract with Fairfax Group is signed.

 

1991

Hannanprint opens its new Melbourne site at Noble Park, a purpose built web-printing plant on five-hectares. Hannanprint Victoria becomes the most modern printing facility in the state, with Royal Auto, Melbourne Age, Good Weekend magazine and BRW as foundation clients.

 

1993

NDD distributes more than 1,000 magazine titles confirming its position as a significant distributor in Australia delivering to over 5,500 newsagents and 2,000 supermarkets twice weekly Australia wide.

 

1995

The group acquires all shares in the publicly listed Inprint Ltd, with offices in Sydney, and plants in Brisbane, Sydney and Cairns.  Inprint's core expertise is high quality sheetfed and heatset web printing.

 

Just 3 months later the Group acquires all shares in the publicly listed Offset Alpine Printing, a world class, technologically advanced print facility with the extensive pre-press resources. The acquisition also includes sheetfed printer, The Pot Still Press - a premium quality printer based at Artarmon, and Sinnott Bros, one of the largest, most experienced digital pre-press companies in Australia. Sinnott Bros and OAP pioneer Computer to Plate (CtP) technology, the first CtP printers in the Southern Hemisphere.

 

1996

Inprint's Sydney plant integrates into the Offset Alpine Printing plant at Lidcombe.

 

1997

The Pot Still Press pioneers the use of waterless printing on its sheetfed presses. Project Management Group (now PMG Solutions) is established this year, providing customers with a reliable alternative to in-house print and graphic procurement.

 

The group acquires Craft Printing in Sydney, a commercial sheet and web printer with unique skills in specialty product printing.

 

Hannanprint Sydney proudly prints the largest ever issue of The Wentworth Courier at 368 tabloid pages - a world record in community newspaper publishing.

 

Newsagents Direct Distribution (NDD) is awarded the Gold Medal as the World's Best Importer at the IPD Awards in London.

 

1998

All businesses of the Group come together under the banner of Independent Print Media Group (IPMG).

 

The member companies that form IPMG Printing receive more 1998 National Print awards than any other printing group in Australia; 8 Gold, 5 Silver and 4 Bronze Print Awards as well as the Craft Award.

 

Digital printing facilities are installed in Melbourne and in Brisbane and a new 32 page twin web press commissioned in Dubbo.

 

1999

IPMG extends its CtP network and installs a number of new presses including two 48 page single web presses. Offset Alpine Printing installs a perfect binding line, the most modern and efficient in Australia.

 

Impact Marketing & Merchandising is formed through the initiative of NDD Distribution, offering the full range of merchandising services and also to broader commercial clients.

 

2000

The Ferag high speed rotary drum saddle stitcher is commissioned at Hannanprint Sydney.

 

A new 48 page web press and saddle stitching capacity is installed at Hannanprint Victoria.

 

In the same year a new 24 page web press is installed at Offset Alpine.

 

Continuous investment in press technology over the years means that average press age places IPMGs equipment as the newest in the Australian market.

 

IPMG once again receive more National Print Awards than any other printer in Australia witha total of 29 awards, achieving the status of Australia's most awarded printer yet again in 2002 winning a grand total of 33 medals.

 

2001

An additional new 48 page web press is installed at Hannanprint Sydney.

 

2002

In July 2002, Hannanprint Sydney changes its name to become known as Hannanprint NSW in order to accurately reflect the state (rather than city) wide nature of its operations.

 

A second Ferag drum stitcher is installed at Hannanprint NSW.

 

New management information systems have commenced installation at the three majorweb printing plants of Hannanprint NSW, Hannanprint Victoria and Offset Alpine Printing making IPMG Printing ready to meet the new communication demands of our clients.

 

2003

The Hannan family acquires the remaining 50% of the IPMG business from Marinya, a company controlled by the JB and TV Fairfax companies. As a result, IPMG is now 100% privately owned by the members of the Hannan family.

 

2004

Hannanprint NSW is the first in the greater Asia Pacific region to install the first Creo Magnus very large format (VLF) CtP device at its Alexandria site, enabling production of quality imaging with repeatability, reliability, improved functionality and increased speed.

 

Good Weekend celebrates its 20th anniversary, having been printed by Hannanprint NSW every week of the 20 years. At 208 pages for Sydney and Melbourne, this edition is the biggest magazine ever produced in this country.
